Hotel Review: La Mamounia Hotel, Marrakech

My motto in life is that every dark cloud has a silver lining.  So after checking out of the Sahara Palace Hotel due to poor service (the dark cloud) we checked into La Mamounia Hotel (our silver lining).  I had pondered originally about staying at La Mamounia Hotel but in the end I wanted a property that wasn’t in the medina hence my first choice of hotel.

After getting transferred between hotels, as soon as we stepped inside La Mamounia it was like entering paradise and my little spring in my step returned (even though my tummy was rumbling due to a lack of food!).  G and I have decided we need to visit all the hotels that Winton Churchill has stayed at as he had blooming good taste; 2 down – La Mamounia and the Old Cataract Hotel, not sure how many more to go!

Now the check in, it was a long wait, 1.5 hrs – now I wouldn’t have minded if they had told me that the room wasn’t ready so I could have joined G in the bar (he had got fed up waiting and wanted a drink; trust me the grizzly hungry kiwi bear was present and he was lucky to escape!).  The communication could have been a lot better at check in as it was pants (see I write honest reviews!).

So are you read for a snoop inside our Room (Number 111, I was slightly worried as this is the emergency number in NZ and thought is this a sign that someone is going to have to do an emergency helicopter gluten free food drop into Marrakech…I’m a total drama queen I know!)

As we left our previous hotel in a hurry, there wasn’t that much availability of rooms at La Mamounia so we ended up booking a bog standard cheap room as this was the only room showing as available on expedia.  The room was lovely, spacious…

…with a large hall and entrance but not the best view in the world

…and a beautiful but extremely small bathroom.  The toilet is rather tiny and if you are 5″11 (like me) or taller then you won’t be able to shut the toilet door when on the loo as your legs will be too long.  You could obviously try and do a yoga pose on the toilet seat but I always find this to be slightly awkward.  It unfortunately took an age for the water to heat up for a shower…and I mean minutes not seconds!

I loved the fresh fruit and roses which were placed in our room; such a beautiful touch!

Needing to have a snoop and seeing what we were missing out on we asked if we could check out a suite!  Next time…..this is an executive suite.

Look at the view from the balcony over the gardens and the medina, so worth the extra few million pennies!

One of the most iconic photos of Marrakech is the indoor poor and spa at La Mamounia Hotel and yes it’s that stunning that it takes your breathe away and then you squeal, take a million photos and then instagram and tweet it to make everyone jealous!  You can read how to enjoy a spa day at La Mamounia Hotel here…even if you’re not staying at the hotel and let me tell you, it’s not expensive!

The tiles around the indoor pool are lovely and worthy of a few pics.

If I ever wanted to find G, he was either in the Bar (which is now his second favourite in the world) or at the pool.

Brekkie was served each day at the pool and here is my post on the gluten free options at La Mamounia Hotel where the staff are totally clued up and knowledgable about dietary requirements; thank goodness we moved hotels!

The gardens are beautiful and so well maintained.  There is a big herb and vegetable garden at the back of the hotel which the hotel uses in their kitchens.  I never felt like the hotel was crowded, you could always find your own little bit of paradise somewhere in the hotel.

Would I recommend – yes and we are planning our return!  Even though we did have a hick up during check in (apparently due to us making a last minute booking and they were’t ready for us), we did enjoy the rest of our stay.  La Mamounia Hotel is definitely one of the finest 5 star hotels that I’ve ever stayed at and the service level was high.

The wifi at the property (available throughout the hotel) is slow but I did find at certain times of the day it worked faster.

If you do stay at La Mamounia Hotel then be aware there is a special VIP Lounge for you to use at arrivals so you don’t have to deal with the hustle and bustle of the immigration queues; apparently you can relax and drink tea!
