A number of years ago my friend and I decided to go and visit the market but got off at the Latimer Road tube stop and it can be a bit difficult to find Portobello Road from here, we ended up giving up and went to Camden instead – this was in the olden days when you didn’t have google maps on your phone! Portobello Road is a lot easier to find and its sign posted from the Notting Hill stop on the Central Line.
I don’t like crowds so I decided to go to Portobello Road on a Friday afternoon which is a lot less crowded however there are less market stalls. There were still plenty of stalls selling pretty china sets, handmade jewellery, food and flowers so I didn’t feel like I was missing out too much.
For me the best bit was that you could wander around all the beautiful antique shops along Portobello Road without getting pushed about by all the other tourists doing the same thing – Alice’s is definitely a favourite and well worth a look just for the fun factor alone!
Portobello Road is a mixture of pretty Antique shops, designer and high street shops all mixed together so its a really cool place to visit and do a bit of shopping in London especially if its a lovely sunny day.
I didn’t buy anything apart from a couple of bunches of pretty daffodils for my friend and I, whom I was meeting for dinner afterwards. I did find two rather pretty pairs of earrings but I put them down and walked away, that was a novelty I can tell you!
Obviously Notting Hill is one of the wealthiest areas in London and there are gorgeous pastel colour homes that looked like candy floss dotted off Portobello Road. They are very easy to spot however I didn’t take that many photos as my hands were about to drop off with frost bite!
If you can’t decide between Portobello Road and Camden markets here is the difference between the two – while Portobello Road is the pretty, pastel demure sister; Camden is the hard, bright rebel sister. Both are extremely fun to visit.
