London is a fabulous city however at times you need to escape to the country side to recharge the batteries, even if it’s only for a few hours. As London is a giant transport hub, it makes it super easy to take a day trips from London by train and I thought I would share my ten favourite places…
Windsor
One of the prettiest places to visit and super close to London (means that you can have a little sleep in on the weekend); visiting Windsor Castle is a must, it’s the Queen’s favourite castle and then of course you have Eton College to wander through.
Canterbury
Home to the famous Canterbury Cathedral and also the Canterbury Tales – the Cathedral will blow you away with its beauty and size. Spring time is a great time to visit the city.
Bath
Ahh Bath, now while I drove to Bath last month I have in the past caught the train. Bath is one of those places where you feel like you have stepped off a super fast train from London and ended up right in the middle of a Jane Austen novel. You can read more about Bath here.
Oxford
I’m a Cambridge girl at heart but sometimes you need to check out the competition; for me Oxford is a bigger version of Cambridge and will keep any Harry Potter movie buff rather happy. You can read more about Oxford here via Amanda’s blog Rhyme & Ribbons.
Cambridge
My favourite place in England, Cambridge! This city just blows my mind with its beauty and I don’t think you will find another perfect place in this world to go punting. You can read more about Cambridge here.
Arundel
Love castles, cream teas and antique shops; then seriously you need to check out Arundel. I can’t recommend this town enough and not just because I used to live there. You can read more about Arundel Castle here via The Selfish Years. (image credit)
Winchester
Famous for being the resting place of Jane Austen, the city is filled with little cobbled streets and quaint pubs to keep you toasty warm during the colder months. You can read more about Winchester here via A Young Wife’s Tale or check out Marlene’s blog Chocolate Cookies and Candies as she’s based in Winchester so she’s always sharing beautiful photos. Rye
If I had to choose between Arundel and Rye, I would pick Arundel (only beacause Arundel has a castle so you have a tad bit more to do) but once again if you like little cobbled streets with lots of antique shops then you can’t go wrong taking a trip to Rye. You can read more about Rye here via The Only Place Blog. (image credit)
Dover
Often overlooked by most tourists, the White Cliffs of Dover are outstanding and walking along the cliffs during the summer months is pure heaven. Of course there is Dover Castle to tempt you inside if the weather turns a little pants. You can read more about Dover here via Naturally Leah. (image credit)
Brighton
One of my favourite day trips is to Brighton; fun, quirky and something for everyone this is the perfect little day trip if you can’t decide on where to visit. Make sure you wander through The Lanes (close your eyes as you walk past all the jewellery shops – one lovely shop owner let me try on a £520,000 diamond ring but I didn’t buy it as it made my bum look big! and yes that’s me crying on the Merry-Go-Round as I could see through the cracks in the pier and my fear of heights took over – I’m a total big girls blouse!). You can read more about Brighton here via Amanda’s blog Rhyme & Ribbons.
