For Labour Weekend here in New Zealand, we jumped in the smurf mobile for a little tiki tour……heading in the direction of Taupo and the first thing we decided to do on arrival was the Taupo Street Art Walk around the city centre.
Graffiato is basically a festival of graffiti by various artists…and the best bit is, it’s free!
Kiwis love free things…we can be tight, tight, tight!
Labour Weekend is when they refresh the street art…yeap, they paint over the top of the existing street art and then paint a new design.
I’m a huge lover of Street Art; Melbourne and Athens are two cities that do it really well…but I’m going to say it…the Taupo Street Art is not to be missed and is up there with the big boys.
Walking around we took various photos posing in front of the graffiti…
…as can you say you visited without a graffiti selfie!?! Absolutely have no idea what face I’m trying to pull in that first photo.
I’m a lover of bright coloured artwork so a number of pieces at Graffiato really floated my boat..
…I’m not one to shy away from colour.
^^This was definitely my favourite mural in the Taupo street art walk.
There are over 80 murals dotted around the Taupo city centre and on Labour weekend, there were 10 new murals created by 12 artists.
Not every mural is going to rock your world…but don’t fret, just around the corner is most likely one that you’ll love!
As with any long weekend…we had arrived quite late into Taupo due to every Aucklander trying to escape the city (the weather was actually better in Auckland over Labour Weekend than anywhere else in the country!)…
…so the sun was definitely setting on our Taupo Street Art parade which was unfortunate.
Kiwis love animals…
…alot!
We managed to spot almost all of the murals and see a few new murals getting painted over the course of the weekend.
Looking for free things to do in Taupo…then the Graffito Taupo Street Art Walk is a great starting point!
