Vienna, the birth place of Marie Antoinette; the lady of that very famous quote – “let them eat cake”, so you can’t visit and not overindulge in the sweet pleasure of gluten free cake in Vienna.
My first stop on my cake tour was The Intercontinental Hotel in Vienna where in the Club Lounge the following cakes were served up.
One the left was my gluten free cake inspired by the Lebkuchen biscuit filled with jam and it was so good that I had a piece in my handbag for the flight home! The gluten loaded cake on the right is filled with very yummy rhubarb. The perfect cake to have with a nice cup of tea.
Cafe Vienna situated on the ground floor of the Intercontinental Hotel offered the yummiest chocolate mousse cake; one word – YUM! I’m happy to have this piece of gluten free goodness spending a lifetime on my hips.
On our visit to the Schönbrunn Palace we stopped off at the Cafe on site to have a cup of tea and some cake after burning off some calories walking around the gardens (possibly not enough for the cakes we ordered though!)
It was lovely to sit outside in the Autumn weather (bar the pesky birds that kept visiting our table and I’m afraid of birds!). My gluten free chocolate cake is the one on the top and G’s cake is the fruit cheesecake.
Our next cake stop was Demel for a take out piece of gluten free cake before we rushed off for a night at the Opera.
There was two gluten free options (left photo) with almond tiers with an option of either a butter cream or chocolate cream filling. If you are eating gluten there are so many yummy looking cakes; I think my hand prints can still be found on the glass case!
We had made a booking for Afternoon Tea at The Ritz Carlton in Vienna as I haven’t yet visited a Ritz Carlton hotel in my Afternoon Tea New Years Resolution Challenge to find the best gluten free Afternoon Tea. You can see my review here for the Afternoon Tea.
After meeting the patisserie chef at The Ritz Carlton who kindly pointed out all his gorgeous gluten free option cakes, I decided to try the carrot cake and oh my goodness it was amazing! On the day we visited there were four gluten free cake options!
On Sunday morning before leaving Vienna I realised that I had yet to purchase my fridge magnet; so I sent G off to the spa at the hotel and went out to find the best fridge magnet a girl could find. After a traumatic shopping experience to find that perfect tacky magnet a slice of cake was required. A secret trip to Gerstner was just what the doctor ordered, hello my last piece of gluten free goodness!
Four days does give you ample time to eat a LOT of gluten free cake in Vienna!
