A Gluttons Guide to Eating Gluten Free in Liverpool

So this weekend I popped up to Liverpool with Superbreak to explore the city (which I will blog about later) however I wanted to share all my gluten free in Liverpool tips as that’s one of the reasons I blog…sharing gluten free recommendations makes everyones life just a tad easier when you’re travelling.

Ed’s Easy Diner – Lord Street, Liverpool

I love 1950’s style diners and Ed’s Easy Diner didn’t disappoint especially when it comes with a whole gluten free menu (I felt special)…yes a gluten free menu with all your options clearly marked out right down to which milkshakes you can have.  I highly recommend this place for a bite to eat…I went for a classic chicken burger, cheesy chips and a mint milkshake…I’m a pig but you never know where your next gluten free meal is coming from.

Pizza Express – a few restaurants dotted around Liverpool

When it doubt…Pizza Express it!  If I’m stuck trying to find places to visit with gluten free food options then I head straight for Pizza Express…gluten free pizzas…its a no brainer and it’s saved me a few times when I’ve been desperately hungry.

The Beatles Story – Albert Dock

There’s a cafe at The Beatles Story at Albert Dock…on checking the only option they had was a prepackaged gluten free brownie (and I really hate brownies…until I’m at the point of hunger tears and then I eat about ten of them in one sitting!) however it’s good to see there is a gluten free option available.

The Bluecoat

There’s a more relaxed cafe on the ground floor at The Bluecoat (relaxed = screaming kids) and their gluten free options I spotted a stuffed sweet potato which reminded me of New Zealand (these seemed to be all the gluten free rage in NZ)…I couldn’t see any gluten free cake options however I didn’t ask (I’d just visited Ed’s and G was with me…I could have nailed a piece of cake and just undone the button of my jeans but G would have looked down his little nose at me for being Miss Piggy)

Marks & Spencer

Like Pizza Express…M&S are a gluten free saviour in times of need with gluten free options throughout the store…not all stores stock gluten free sarnies however you can pick up cheeses, cold meats, fruit salads and a few other salads…or you could be really healthy and buy what I did. Oh my goodness…I’ve just read the number of calories…eek!

Pinch – 16 Castle Street, Liverpool

I was recommended to visit Moose Coffee in Liverpool and after checking out their website which stated they had gluten free options…I was told on arrival that they didn’t…all rather annoying.  So we stumbled upon Pinch and even though they only had sandwich options at lunch time they were able to make me a Tuna Salad for lunch with chunky chips.  I can’t thank these guys enough for accommodating me in my moment of need.

The Cafe at Woodside Ferry Terminal

So there’s a cafe at the Woodside Ferry Terminal if you decide to hop off the Mersey Ferry to check out the U-Boat Museum.  The Cafe has no gluten free options…hells bells they even ran out of cream for my hot chocolate…the service was pretty dire…it took over 20 minutes to get our drinks.  It’s a place to stop for a rather expensive drink…over £6 for a coffee and a hot chocolate.

The Pullman Hotel, Liverpool

The Pullman Hotel in Liverpool was our home for the night so we had breakfast in the hotel…trust me, it’s easier to have brekkie in your hotel then trying to find a gluten free breakfast / brunch menu.  There were fresh fruit options, a full cooked breakfast plus gluten free toast was available on request.

Virgin Trains First Class Lounge, Liverpool

I’m sharing everything…Virgin Trains don’t offer gluten free options in first class and their lounge in Liverpool didn’t have much either so visit the M&S at Liverpool Lime Street train station and pick yourself up a few bits and pieces.  There were some apples and popcorn which were gluten free however that was about it…and the apples had seen better days.

Liverpool Gluten Free options that we didn’t have a chance to visit

So it was Mothering Sunday yesterday hence everywhere was fully booked for afternoon tea and trying to get a lunch time booking was like gold dust also but I’m not holding that against Liverpool as I love the city.  I did find a number of gluten free options in Liverpool when I was doing my research so I’m sharing them even though I didn’t have a chance to visit them.

  • Afternoon Tea at Panoramic 34 – they apparently can make a gluten free afternoon tea with 48 hours notice.
  • The Interesting Eating Company – they make gluten free pancakes and I love pancakes!
  • Leaf – a great menu and even caters for pescatarians as well….breakfast, brunch, lunch and afternoon tea options…pull up a chair and just remember to wear your maternity pants.
  • Gorge’us – a cake shop in Spital with gluten free cake options…if I visited, I doubt I would have left the tea rooms.

I hope this Gluten Free in Liverpool Guide helps out a few people looking for options!  If you know any other great establishments please let me know and I can add them in…I’m all for helping out the gluten free community while travelling.
