Gluten Free Shropshire Guide

So this weekend we had a little adventure exploring the county of Shropshire…obviously not the whole county as that wouldn’t be possible in 48 hours but we had enough time for me to sample some gluten free cake of course.  Without further ado here is my Gluten Free Shropshire Guide!

Shrewsbury

Gluten Free Living, 11 The Market Hall, Shrewsbury

Located inside the market hall, Gluten Free Living is gluten free heaven!  From homemade biscuits and cakes (I can’t thank you enough for making me gluten free Shrewsbury biscuits!) to flours, beers, pies and everything else of gluten free dreams.

The Shrewsbury biscuits were super tasty…I bought 8 and I may have eaten 8!

^^That’s me eating a Shrewsbury biscuit in Shrewsbury! Tick!  (One of my old bosses was in giggles when I told her that I drove for over 2 hours in each direction to eat a Bakewell pudding a number of years ago, it confirmed her suspicions that I was crazy…I’ve eaten a Cheddar Sandwich in Cheddar…you see how this goes right!)

The Market Hall

So if you’re looking for fresh produce then head straight to The Market Hall under the 1960’s clock as there are plenty of stores selling fresh fruit to tickle your tastebuds…plus it’s rather photogenic.

The Gallery Tearooms

This was G’s choice…he saw a breakfast option of a bacon sandwich and a mug of tea for £3.95 and he was inside like a flash regardless if there were any gluten free options.  Obviously it’s no longer breakfast time at almost 2pm so G had to have a BLT instead…he loved his lunch.

My gluten free option was rather limited to a baked potato and it was the last one!  I haven’t eaten a baked potato in a long time…it reminded me how far gluten free options have come in the past 2 years and how grateful I am for businesses embracing gluten free options.

Telford

Holiday Inn Telford

We stayed at the Holiday Inn in Telford – it had a great location, basic but functional and I needed to hit some targets to gain some more IHG points.  As we had arrived slightly damp thanks to the bank holiday weekend rain we decided to stay in the hotel to eat…the restaurant was fully booked…yeah we were shocked as well so we ended up eating at the bar!

My dinner consisted of an egg sandwich and crisps which was perfectly acceptable…to be fair I had eaten a jacket potato at lunch time so I wasn’t too hungry (I may have possibly eaten a few Shrewsbury biscuits before heading down for dinner as well!)

Breakfast was pretty amazing…I sat down and checked the menu…everything in the buffet was shown on the menu and stated clearly if gluten free or not…happy dance!  I wish all buffets came with a menu like this…it would make life a lot easier and it was the first time that I had found gluten free hash browns.

My gluten free heart attack on a plate…I’ve just realised that I ate a lot of baked beans in Shropshire…eek!

Ironbridge

The Riverside Tea Room

There were two reasons for me to visit Ironbridge – 1/ to see the bridge obviously and 2/ to eat cake!  My gluten free research had found me a great little tea room called The Riverside Tea Room located inside an antiques shop…seriously it was heavenly!

The second tier of that display is all gluten free!  And there was a vegan option so if you’re dairy free then there was something for you as well.

I went for the gluten free cherry bakewell cake and I highly recommend it!

Bridgnorth

The Old Terrace Sweet Shop

Okay I’m slightly cheating here but I was pretty much stuffed after eating a cooked breakfast and then a piece of cake…but you can always fit in a lolly or two (sweets for the non-kiwis) and to be honest who could resist such a cute little shop.

These are the gluten free establishments that are tried and tested by me.

Are there any other recommendations that I need to add to this Gluten Free Shropshire Guide; if so, please feel free to leave any recommendations in the comments below to share with other gluten free folks.
