Visiting All the English Counties 21/48Our Road Trip Around Cornwall, England

Last month, G and I took a jolly little road trip around Cornwall…there were only two places that were set in stone that we wanted to visit and the rest of the time it was just wherever we fancied and a few naps in-between as we were on holiday after all and napping is compulsory…the salty air works wonders for insomnia, trust me.

There are so many beautiful places to visit in Cornwall like Port Isaac and Charlestown which makes it hard to choose just a few spots to visit for a long weekend. So without further ado here is what we managed to visit during our road trip around Cornwall…drum roll please…

Eden Project

This was sitting on G’s bucket list for ages, apparently he saw a TV documentary on the Eden Project a number of years ago and wanted to visit.  After checking out the visitor information I worked out that entrance was £27.50 per person so I found a cheap way of visiting…my frugal tendencies are showing and I’m not sorry (find out how to do the same in the travel tip section below…I’m going to make you scroll baby, right to the end).

The Eden Project is a great place to visit to learn more about the environment, plants and how we all need to work together to live on this planet….I’ve really taken to gardening this year and have made sure that most of our plants feed the local bees as without bees we can’t exist…get rid of those succulents and start planting flowers folks!

I’m in total two minds about the Eden Project and will do a post later on due to the reasons why…but it’s amazing to see the changes from my first visit to the Eden Project so many moons ago.

Port Isaac

I’m a big fan of Doc Martin…strangely G is very similar to the Doc in personality and mannerisms, his Mum and even G agrees with this statement…his matter of fact nature does make me laugh and roll my eyes.

Visiting Port Isaac was on my bucket list and it didn’t disappoint; you will need to walk down and back up a rather large hill to get into the fishing village but it’s totally worth it.  I loved this little fishing village as it’s not as touristy as I imagined it was going to be and it wasn’t overcrowded which was a right old blessing on the day we visited.  You can read more about Port Isaac here…and there are a load more photos to enjoy as well!

Charlestown

I’ve never watched Poldark however Charlestown is used in filming due to its small historic port so it’s becoming a hot little tourist destination in Cornwall…plus it’s rather cute hence why we visited.

The village is rather small however it’s a tad bit more touristy that Port Isaac with a few restaurants, an antique shop and little galleries to enjoy a spot of shopping here and there.

G sat down and watched the RNLI rescue two teenagers that managed to get stuck on the rocks during high tide while I photographed the tall ship and colourful houses…that’s how we roll in our house.  You can read more about Charlestown here…plus there are plenty more photos to scroll through!

Mevagissey

Now this was high on my list and we ventured to Mevagissey on the Sunday which was our first big mistake…second was visiting this part of the world during the British school holidays…we drove through the town and stopped further around the coast for a drink by the seaside. Hopefully we will venture back as it looked like a lovely spot to visit and I was actually looking at staying here but thankfully I booked a much quieter location.

Travel Tips for Road Trip Around Cornwall

  • When choosing where you want to visit, make sure you check out the route that is on offer as you don’t want to take tiny country roads especially if you’re a nervous driving…some of the country lanes around Cornwall are pretty hairy for the most experienced of drivers.
  • A little car is better than a huge beast of a vehicle as the roads through some villages are pretty narrow…and for parking!
  • Cornwall is a rather large county so focus on a particular area and explore that area in detail rather than spending ages sitting inside of your car.
  • We stayed at a great little B&B and the owners were super lovely and it was in a very convenient location for our travels…Cornwall is all about great hospitality so make sure you try and support local business folks while in the area.  Check out www.booking.com for all your accommodation needs in Cornwall…there is something for everyone’s budget or taste.
  • If you want to keep your accommodation costs down then I would avoid travelling through July and August as it’s school holiday time here in the UK so prices sky rocket.
  • There are a number of National Trust and Historic Houses to check out in Cornwall…why not check out this post on Which British Heritage Pass you should buy for you and your family.
  • If you are looking for a load of tips on Cornwall then I would suggest checking out Anna’a blog;  Anna’s Cornwall Directory post is a great starting point and she will point you in the direction of some right old gems.
  •  Gluten free in Cornwall is easy peasy; I had no problems anywhere which makes travelling gluten free stress free…I even found a gluten free Cornish Pasty in Port Isaac (well it was a Pasty Pie however I couldn’t eat it as it was laden with onions…onions and I aren’t friends).  Just google “Gluten Free Cornwall” and there are bajillion recommendations for you to try.
  • You can book your tickets in advance to get a cheaper entrance price into the Eden Project however if you buy the May Gardeners’ World magazine you will be able to gain 2 for 1 entry saving you a massive £27.50 at the Eden Project alone!  The magazine is only £5.99 and there a number of discounts on offer for gardens around the UK…Kew Gardens is also included in the 2 for 1 offer however not during in July and August.
