What I Wore: What to Wear in Marrakech

I have a grand love affair with North Africa and the Middle East so I know how important it is to dress appropriately i.e. keep the boobies and bottom covered and your likely hood of getting hassled will be halved!  So here is my little guide on what to wear in Marrakech; I hope it helps one or two ladies out!

Morocco Travel Tips: Advice on what female travellers should wear and pack when travelling to Morocco. Dressing respectfully means less hassle so you will enjoy your vacation more!

I didn’t have a chance to photograph every outfit; that would just be too hard work and I prefer to eat rather than trying to pose badly (I could never ever be a fashion blogger!).

Left to Right: Monsoon Stripe Maxi Dress; Boden Broderie Stripe Tee; Boden Broderie Cape Top; Boden Favourite CardiganBoden Long Line Sleeveless Shirt; Asos Skinny Jeans

Remember that cotton and linen are your friends when it’s all hot and steamy especially during the summer months in Marrakech!  A long sleeve cardigan or scarf will cover up your arms when required.

Shopping in the Souq

Cover yourself up and you won’t have any issues; yes every shop owner will beckon you in to buy a million and one scarves but this is totally normal.  Long trousers, jeans or maxi skirts work a treat and if you don’t want dirty feet then stick to closed in shoes as it can get pretty dusty shopping in the souq.

Afternoon Tea at La Mamounia

As we were staying at the hotel I went more casual and went for a maxi dress, cardie and flats; maxi dresses cover up a multitude of sins (when you hit your 30s you realise you learn to hide rather than paying a crap load of money on fancy creams like you did in your 20s as it’s all down to genetics anyway…but I digress).

What to Wear in Marrakech when it comes to Shoes

I have a simple rule; three pairs packed in your luggage plus a fourth pair on your tootsies and Marrakech was no different.  If you plan to take a few Moroccan shoefies on holiday then I suggest you wear prettier shoes than I did.  My shoes choices for Marrakech were a pair of Converse (worn numerous times in the souq), Birkenstock Sandals C/o Intercontinental Berlin that are actually quite comfy if you get puffy feet when it’s hot; Havaianas for the spa and a pair of Greek Sandals (similar style here).

Swimwear for the Pool

Obviously anything goes especially if you are at a huge tourist hotel with foreigners but getting slightly prudiest in my old age (and trying to hide a few scone rolls that I’ve collected due to writing those pesky Gluttons Guides to Eating Gluten Free Afternoon Tea posts) I opt for a one piece.  I won’t frightened you all with a pic in my togs…but you can check out my Swimwear Pinterest Board if you fancy!

Sunglasses

Take a pair with you that will offer UV protection as you will need them to protect your eyes from the sun and dust.

Scarves

If you plan to visit a Mosque while in Marrakech then a scarve comes in rather handy and you can pick them up in the souq for around a £1 (depending on how good you are at haggling).
