Gluten Free Afternoon Tea at The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

I couldn’t visit a new country without trying at least one gluten free afternoon tea; so we decided to check out the Afternoon Tea at The Majestic Hotel in Kuala Lumpur where we were actually staying for our last two nights in Malaysia.

Sandwiches

There were two buns stuffed with Tuna and Smoked Salmon and salad fillings (the vegetables were a little too thick for the size of the bun), chicken skewers which were lovely and a juicy mushroom.  The gluten free buns were a little heavy for my liking so I just ate the fillings.

Scones

The gluten free scones passed my scone test…they were easy to cut into, they didn’t break any teeth and they were yummy however they were very crumbly as you can tell from the photos.

One thing that I did like, was that we both had our own little set of jam and cream…G and I are normally at war with each other at afternoon tea as we don’t like sharing the jam…this is what normally happens when we go out for afternoon tea together but didn’t this time…this picture is just for show!

Pastries

Now I was rather impressed with the gluten free pastries on offer which include a blueberry muffin, mini meringue cases filled with grapes, mini chocolate cakes and a sugary marshmallow topped with white chocolate lego pieces (G ate those as I’m not a fan of white chocolate).  I thought the variety on offer was excellent and there was something for everyone.

For the Gluten Eating Monsters

Now if you’re a gluten eating monster then this the offerings at the afternoon tea at The Majestic Hotel; G had no complaints and managed to scoff the whole cake stand in minutes!

Tea

The Majestic Hotel serves a traditional black BOH tea (where we actually visited in the Cameron Highlands) however I find that I’m quite partial to a white tea so we ordered a large pot of white tea.

Unfortunately the first lot of tea was luke warm…okay that is being kind…it was cold…we ended up drinking a cup as we couldn’t catch the eye of a waiter to complain…the next lot of white tea was hot thankfully.

Atmosphere

Afternoon Tea at The Majestic Hotel is served in three different areas and if you want to book the afternoon tea in The Orchid Conservatory then you need to book months in advance.  Unfortunately I booked quite late (surprise, surprise) and we ended up in the Colonial Cafe which is lovely however we didn’t have the best table and it’s rather noisy…we had a hen party behind us and were surrounded by children (some were well behaved and others weren’t – it took the gloss off the experience slightly).

Service

Hmmm well I had to wait almost 40 minutes for our afternoon tea to be served even though we had a booking at 3pm, we were on time…the food wasn’t and everyone else was getting served around us.  I’m now used to this kind of service as gluten free customers tend to get appalling service and have to wait and wait and wait….I was slightly frustrated and when I started looking at my watch with flaring nostrils…I finally received an apology and told that it was coming (so was our flight back to Hong Kong!)…35 minutes into our wait!

The service wasn’t exactly brilliant unfortunately.

Would I recommend the Afternoon Tea at The Majestic Hotel in Kuala Lumpur – I think there isn’t anything really wrong with the afternoon tea especially when you see the price however the service was pretty hit and miss unfortunately which let down the whole afternoon tea experience.

If you’re gluten free you need to order the afternoon tea at least two weeks in advance, yes two weeks!

Prices start at RM 48 per person for the Tea Lounge (£8 pp approx), RM 68 for the Drawing Room (£11 pp approx) and RM 88 per person for afternoon tea in the Orchid Conservatory (£14 pp approx).  Rather cheap when you compare it to London prices!

Have you visited The Majestic Hotel in Kuala Lumpur for afternoon tea; what were your thoughts and experience?
