My New Year’s Resolution is still going strong…even though I’m rather behind in my posts! A few weekends ago I decided to explore Bury St Edmunds in the beautiful county of Suffolk – I visited Suffolk earlier in the year but didn’t manage to have a cup of tea so decided it was a perfectly good reason to revisit the county…
…for a cup of tea at Harriets Cafe Tearooms!
This was my very first place I stopped when I arrived at Bury St Edmunds…two gluten free scones please…I may have taken one home for G to eat…that will possibly tell you honestly what I thought of the gluten free scones…I shared my scones…and we won’t ask why I received milk with my peppermint tea.
The cake cabinet did look seriously divine if you were a gluten eating monster…the only gluten free cake option on the day I visited was macarons.
After a refreshing cup of tea, it was time to sniff the roses quite literally at the flower market stalls right in front of the tearooms…Columbia Road Flower Market eat your heart out!
It was Saturday and since my trip home to New Zealand I feel like I’ve regained some of my ninja shopping powers (albeit I’m not anywhere up to the standard of my mum and sister…my sister went shopping after having a general anaesthetic and operation this week…ninja shopping powers right there folks!)…so I checked out the shops which I was rather impressed with as Bury St Edmunds contains all the high street names you’re used too plus a few rather nice boutique shops where I spotted a rather lovely DVF dress and some shoes.
^^And obviously I couldn’t forgot a photo of the florist…Liberty eat your heart out!
Now you know I like taking photos of doors…well Bury St Edmunds has a killer set of bright and colourful doors…
…and I instantly fell in love with the town…
…I was kind and put them in a nice collage so you don’t suffer from door porn RSI!
I’m a grand wanderer as I think you find some of the most delightful things when you leave the tourist trail and get lost down little roads…
…like finding wobbly buildings…
…and more wobbly houses…
…photographing beautiful windows…
…Bury in Bloom awards…
…pretty little streets…
…and beautiful old signage!
Finding my way back to the centre of Bury St Edmunds…I went for a little stroll through a grave yard…weird to some people but I just love looking at the dates on the headstones (normally as they’re older than New Zealand)…it was a beautiful sunny day so people were sitting in the church yard basking in the sunshine…
…I was just took a few too many photos really!
My next stop was to pop inside the St Edmundsbury Cathedral…the only cathedral in Suffolk which is totally worth a visit…
…as is a walk around the side of the building to admire all the old architecture…
…and this amazing door…I promise that’s the last door in this post…promise!
The Abbey Gardens were looking glorious under blue skies…
…and there was a light sprinkling of bluebells…the first I spotted this year so I made a little wish!
Was it to return to Suffolk….shhh I can’t say otherwise the wish won’t come true!
I wasn’t hugely hungry however my gluten free research told me that there was a place offering gluten free fish and chips and you don’t pass up this opportunity if you’re gluten free as it doesn’t come around very often…
…serving gluten free every day as they use a separate fryer…I asked…
…and totally yummy, possibly the best gluten free fish and chips I’ve eaten so far…I ordered a cup of tea to go with my fish and chips as that’s what all the other folks were ordering…when in Bury St Edmunds you must visit Bury Fish and Chip Shop…you can eat out or scoff your meal in their very functional restaurant!
Suffolk has so many hidden places to discover…Lavenham totally blew my mind at the end of last year when I visited…
…and I’ve still got to blog about the places I discovered on my Constable tour I did earlier this year when I accidentally crossed the border into Suffolk…Suffolk I will be back! You can learn more about Suffolk on their official tourism page.
Where’s your favourite spot in Suffolk?
xx
