Castle Hunting in England: Knebworth House

I think I can safely say I’m rather behind in my posts…I visited Knebworth House and Gardens just after we got back from our trip to Hong Kong and Malaysia…so this post is a long time in the making!

I’d planned my trip to Knebworth House down to the tee…but the forget to check that I had an empty memory stick or that my camera battery had life…grrr…so apologies in advance as I had to use my iPhone under a rather bright sun hence the rather hazy photos.

Knebworth House is one of the stately homes that you can visit for free using your Historic Houses Association membership (bar on event days…which is of course the day I decided to visit…doh!!…and obviously I wasn’t as organised as I thought!).

While the house itself isn’t huge in size compared to Burghley House or Woburn Abbey, the exterior is pretty darn gorgeous.

Now would you like a snoop inside….

….only joking – you can’t take photos inside the house!  A bloggers nightmare!

As well as taking too many photos of doors this year…I’m adding castle windows to my 2015 obsession list…it’s a pretty good obsession to have me thinks…much cheaper than shoes.

After the house tour, you’re lead into the back courtyard for some rather luscious rear end views…

…Knebworth House looks remarkably more castle like from the back; don’t you think?

Now I’m not sure what this little fella is…a dragon, gargoyle….he obviously pulled a face and then the wind changed!  His mummy obviously didn’t warn him.

After whizzing through the exhibitions…the sordid relationship between a certain Lytton married couple made Eastenders look boring…I was out in the gardens enjoying the English summer and dare I say it…sunshine!

Families from all around venture to Knebworth House and Gardens to enjoy the open space and play area…after taking a few snaps of the flowers…I decided to head home for a cup of tea…(there were a lot of screaming kids…and a cup of tea should be enjoyed in peace).

I’ll be brutally honest and say, I wouldn’t rush back to visit this property again as it was a little dull for my liking (possibly I’ve been ruined by too many fabulous castles and stately homes recently) and really more geared towards families…it would be a perfect place to take the kids for a day trip.

So spill the beans…what’s your favourite stately house or castle?  What hidden gems have you found on your castle hunting weekends?  My favourite this year is definitely Deene Park!
