Many moons ago in a previous job, a work colleague told me that I needed to visit Bridgnorth…I never really investigated his suggestion until I saw it pop up in my Shropshire county research and realised that I REALLY REALLY did need to visit Bridgnorth. Exploring Bridgnorth was our plan for Sunday afternoon…in the rain of course as it was a bank holiday weekend…soggy bottoms are compulsory when exploring England on a bank holiday weekend!
We parked the car and headed off to explore Bridgnorth; Charles I declared the view as “the finest in all my kingdom” and he wasn’t kidding…the town is seriously instagram worthy.
Bridgnorth is split into two – a High Town and a Low Town and both offer amazing views albeit very different views. Starting in the High Town where there are numerous wobbly buildings to discover…
…through the Market Square…
…weaving our way through little lanes with old fashioned signs…
…to discover a church at the end of the lane…
…to a colourful railway station…
…to pretty little lanes filled with bunting…
…more black and white timbered buildings…
…you know I heart door porn!
Bridgnorth was once a thriving port on the banks of the River Severn so the town has a fascinating history; I was stopped by a local who told me that these houses used to be either pubs or brothels or both and yes it’s as steep as it looks!
And you know you have to love England and it’s quirky history…did they pay council tax?!?
As I was puffing and panting up the hill, I ran into this lovely man who was watching the world go by from his door and asked if I could snap his picture…he agreed obviously and I just love this photo as it just shows how lovely the people of Shropshire are!
Of course I found the lolly shop (a sweet shop for those English folks out there)…
…and a few other shops of course…I’m my mothers daughter, I can sniff out a shop or two!
We took a little walk in the direction of the gardens…
…to see another church on the way…
…and to finally get to the gardens…
…that had just sprung into life…
…and yes I forgot about the ruined castle! It wouldn’t be a weekend away really without a castle.
Heading back to take in the views over the Low Town and my goodness the views are just incredible! Do you fancy exploring Bridgnorth now??
Now if you want to visit the Low Town you can take a walk down a very steep hill…
…or you can take a ride in the funicular and I do love a good ol’ funicular…

…gone…well kind of…my patience had run out, sorry!
While I loved exploring the little lanes of the High Town of Bridgnorth and looking down over the Low Town; for me the views from the Low Town back over to the High Town are the best! Just take a little walk across the bridge and look back and get ready for your socks to be rocked off.

…and a firm reminder that there is more to England than just London which I’m going to say I find a tad boring these days as there are so many great places outside of the capital to explore.
