I love a good old sleep in, regardless if I’m on holiday or not…one of the best things about travelling in winter is that sunrise is a lot later…hello 7am sunrise, so I was able to peel myself out of bed and catch the sunrise in Oia on our last day on Santorini.
Climbing a number of stairs to get the perfect vantage point at Oia Castle, I waited and waited…with a man holding a canon camera…I did wonder if he was going to kill me as we seemed to be the only two people awake on Santorini at the time and I’d left my mobile in the room! (He didn’t obviously…phew!)
While the sunrise wasn’t the most spectacular I’ve ever seen (the sunset was even less inspiring…sorry Santorini sunset lovers!)…I did love the absolute calmness of just watching the sun rise over the island…
…and the shadows dancing over the brightly coloured buildings in Oia.
I wandered around Oia as the sun was rising…
…walking down stairs….
…walking up stairs…
…stalked a cat…
…it was my favourite time of the day and also the first time in ages that I had actually relaxed…my mind was able to switch off and just enjoy the moment.
After taking quite a few photos…I popped back to the our accommodation and into my pjs and snuggled up with G before eating a very healthy breakfast of feta cheese, meats and tomatoes…I do love Greece!
Tips for Capturing the Sunrise in Oia, Santorini
- Check what time sunrise is…simple but easy to forget…along with setting your alarm!
- Find a great vantage point – Oia Castle is a great vantage point to catch the sunrise and sunset.
- Look at travelling during the winter months to Santorini as it means you don’t have to get up at sparrows fart to watch the sunrise – this is what to expect if you visit Santorini during winter.
- If you are visiting Santorini during peak season then I imagine sunrise would be less popular than sunset
- All the photos were taken on my Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II (highly recommend purchasing from John Lewis as they will price match!)
