Auckland is often seen as the gateway to New Zealand however the City of Sails has a lot to offer visitors; so let me show you what to do in Auckland for a day or maybe a bit longer..a Local’s Guide to Auckland…written by a local!
Auckland is HUGE…and this is just a real quick rundown of what to do in Auckland for a day if you’re visiting and were short on time and needed some travel ideas!
Auckland Museum
Auckland Museum is often overlooked as a tourist destination as Te Papa in Wellington often wears the title of “Best Museum in New Zealand” however this Auckland landmark offers incredible views over the Harbour as it’s sitting on top of a former volcano plus it’s a glorious piece of architecture that can’t be missed.
The museum offers great displays including the history of New Zealand and the Pacific, World War displays and a sneak peek at our unique wildlife…if you’re looking for fun things to do in Auckland for kids, there are interactive displays to keep everyone entertained.
After a wander through the Museum, take a walk and enjoy a picnic in the Domain.
Alternative: If you’re looking for things to do with the kids in Auckland then visit the Howick Historical Village which gives you a glimpse of New Zealand history from when the European settlers arrived in New Zealand..from their tents, right through to the old houses and shops set up with incredible yesteryear displays for your viewing pleasure.
Alternative: Another cheeky alternative is the Warbirds Museum out in Ardmore Airport…if you love aviation or are a WW2 aircraft buff then this is a must visit for you. You can also book a flight in a Spitfire…it will cost you thousands however it’s on many peoples wish list!
City of Sails
Auckland is called the City of Sails so a whirl on the water is a must when visiting…there are a number of Auckland sightseeing tours including a Whale and Dolphin Safari in the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park or take a relaxing Auckland Harbour Cruise.
Dinner out on the harbour with Explore looks pretty special or a Riverhead cruise to the famous Riverhead Tavern…something to add to my growing New Zealand bucket list!
Sky Tower
The Sky Tower is definitely one of Auckland’s most recognisable buildings…if you have a head for heights then make sure you grab the lift or take the stairs to the top of the viewing platform for views over the city and to the streets below…the crazy cats can pay additional and jump off the Sky Tower. If you’re feeling lucky then check out the casinos!
Visit the Beaches around Auckland
Auckland has incredible beaches, the West Coast beaches like Piha and Muriwai are black sand with waves which make them perfect for surfing…
….while the East Coast beaches like Waitawa and Maraetai are more subdued and are great for swimming. There is a beach for every tastebud in Auckland…enjoy finding the one that’s just perfect for you Goldilocks!
Auckland Island Hopping
If you want to escape the city and have a restful day exploring why not check out Waiheke Island, Tiritiri Matangi Island or Great Barrier Island. Fullers 360 offer numerous day trips from downtown Auckland.
The Gardens of Auckland
There are a number of beautiful gardens and green spaces just waiting to be visited including Cornwall Park during the spring…
…Auckland Botanical Gardens…
….and the Auckland Winter Garden just to name a few.
During December and January, take a drive along the Auckland coastline and enjoy the beautiful Pohutukawa trees in full bloom…Kiwi’s call them the New Zealand Christmas Tree.
Volcano Central
Yes, Auckland is Volcano Central…dotted all around the city of Auckland! So why not make it your mission to climb to the top of each volcano and enjoy the views…plus it’s excellent exercise for the bottom!
Visit the Waterfalls around Auckland
Auckland is home to some very beautiful waterfalls and you don’t need to venture too far out of Central Auckland to find them…go swimming at Kitekite Falls or take a hike and have a picnic at Hunua Falls.
Take a Walk
If you love walking then you’re in for a treat as there are so many great walking tracks and also short walks in and around the city including the boardwalk along Westhaven Marina…
…the Hunua Ranges…
…and Kitekite Falls to name just a few!
Auckland Night Markets
This is something I have yet to do however the Night Markets are becoming a popular destination for great local food and flavours and are located in areas of Auckland not really visited by tourists.
