Before leaving England, I made one last afternoon tea booking at my favourite hotel, Claridge’s. After my first vegan afternoon tea at The Peninsula in Beijing; we thought it was best to try out the Claridge’s Vegan Afternoon Tea and use this as my base for comparison as they offer the best gluten free afternoon tea in London….as my middle name is trouble, I asked Claridge’s for a gluten free vegan afternoon tea.
Gluten Free / Vegan Sandwiches
The gluten free bread was light and fluffy and the fillings were absolutely tasty bar for the cucumber sandwich…I dislike cucumber A LOT! The variety of fillings ranged from roasted peppers, avocado and sweet potato…I actually requested a second helping and G ate my cucumber sarnies.
Gluten Free / Vegan Scones
I’m not going to lie…the gluten free vegan scones weren’t great…never did I think I would utter those words about an afternoon tea at Claridge’s but there you go…my reviews are always very honest as I put my own hard earned cash where my mouth is.
The gluten free vegan scones were rock hard…they passed my scone test just…I could have done with a chain saw to cut them with…and I could only eat one. I won’t lie, it was disappointing. I’m sure if you requested just vegan scones rather than gluten free vegan scones, you would fare better than I did.
^^My scones dressed up to the nines!
Gluten Free / Vegan Pastries
There was a great selection of vegan pastry options with the most decadent and dense chocolate pastry I have ever eaten…I’m not a chocolate pastry kind of gal however it was damn good!
I always feel a bit sick after eating pastries as I find them rather filling but these vegan pastries were amazing, light and the selection was well balanced.
Claridge’s change their afternoon teas every few months which is exciting as you can revisit and try something new every time!
^^ My gluten free vegan afternoon tea is on the right…afternoon tea isn’t served on a cake stand at Claridge’s
Afternoon Tea at Claridge’s for the Gluten Eating Monsters
G can confirm that he still thinks the best scones in the world are at the Grande Bretagne in Athens and Claridge’s is no 2 in the world. You can’t go wrong with the Claridge’s Afternoon Tea if you can stomach gluten…you can see the difference between the afternoon tea at Claridge’s vs The Ritz for comparison here.
Tea
Our server was fantastic throughout the afternoon tea experience…and gave me seriously good tea advice…I went for a beautiful warm chai and then a minty fresh tea to with my vegan pastries.
Service
The customer service is impeccable however not fussy…the staff are happy to take your photo and have a chit chat when time allows it.
Atmosphere
G decided that we should sit in the darkest corner…great for a relaxing however not great for photography…ahhh well…you have to live for the moment as they say.
Would I recommend the Vegan Afternoon Tea at Claridge’s London – I would, I think the problem with the scones is due to the gluten free flour however don’t let this put you off making a booking! The Vegan Afternoon Tea is grand and can be book via the Claridge’s website – the price of afternoon tea starts at £65 pp.
