Belgium is often over looked as a holiday destination however with the 100 year anniversary of World War 1, Belgium is once again in the spot light. After falling in love with Brussels last week I thought I would share 10 cities to visit in Belgium as this country offers a number of hidden gems to visit for a quick break.
Brussels
With direct Eurostar trains and flights from most British airport hubs it’s so easy to travel to Brussels which means two things – chocolates and frites! Forget Paris for a Valentine’s Day destination, take the lady to Brussels for chocolate and much cheaper accommodation. You can check out my City Break to Brussels guide here.
Antwerp
One of Europe’s most beautiful train stations can be found in Antwerp along with Diamonds….seriously Chocolates and Diamonds ladies, book a trip now!! (image credit)
Ghent
Within very easy reach from Brussels on the train (35 mins tops, I slept most of the way) is the beautiful Canal city of Ghent. The city is picture perfect and will make all your friends rather jealous when you post photos on Facebook; hence the reason why G wanted to visit Ghent last week.
Bruges
The elusive Bruges is on my travel wish list but I have still yet to visit and I’ve never heard a bad word uttered about this UNESCO city or it’s cute little Christmas market which is within easy reach of England. (image credit)
Dinant
They say a picture is worth a thousand words so here is a reason why to visit…
Bouillon
Home to a beautiful perfectly preserved fortified castle and a brewery the city of Bouillon will be a crowd pleaser as there is something to offer every tourist or every squabbling couple. (image credit)
Mons
Mons is about to get famous as it’s wearing the 2015 crown for European City of Culture; get ready to see a lot more of this city in the coming months! (image credit)
Charleroi
Charleroi is home to Belgium’s second largest airport (mainly for low cost carriers) however there are still some gems waiting to be discovered in the city. The city airport makes a perfect hub for further european adventures. (image credit)
Durbuy
This gorgeous little medieval town is now firmly on my list of places to visit then next time I’m in Belgium – romantic cobbled streets make this perfect for a little weekend away in the smallest town on earth. (image credit)
Namur
Very close to Brussels, making Namur a perfect little day trip if you want to get out of the capital and explore a citadel while taking in the beautiful views below. (image credit)
If you want to live like a local then I highly recommend checking out S Marks the Spot blog for great tips in Brussels and surrounding cities.
So what are your favourite cities in Belgium and where do you recommend visiting?
