In this world there are luxury hotels and then there are Iconic Luxury Hotels. I’m a big lover of the Iconic Luxury Hotels as they are hotels with old world charm that have stood the test of time. They have an elegance that many of the luxury hotels in this world can never recreate and service that makes me feel like I’m in an episode of Downton Abbey.
On our recent trip to Athens we stayed in the SPG Luxury Collection hotel called the Hotel Grande Bretagne. I have only ever heard fabulous reviews of this hotel and my little sister felt like a princess when she had stayed at the hotel previously so I knew this was going to be a goodie!
The Hotel Grande Bretagne opened it’s doors to welcome well heeled travellers in 1874 and quickly became the only place to stay when in Athens. The hotel has become a bit of a tourist attraction in it’s own right due to it’s fantastic reputation and history.
The Hotel Grande Bretagne is located on Syntagma Square however the moment you step into the hotel you enter an oasis of calm. The lobby is classic and elegant and the staff give a very warm welcome to their guests.
The hotel is beautifully decorated throughout and taking a walk through the hotel we stumbled across a traditional Cigar Room, the Spa and Pool areas. The steam rooms in the Spa are out of this world!
Now I’m going to let you snoop into our lovely room (104) which was amazing – the balcony over looking the Square and Parliament was totally unexpected and gave us a lot of people watching opportunities.
The welcome gifts were totally out of this world! I still grin like a Cheshire Cat when I see the photos…
Food wise the Hotel Grande Bretagne gets top marks – the gluten free Afternoon Tea was divine and G still tells me that his scones were better than Claridges (you can read my Afternoon Tea Review here)
Breakfast is served on the rooftop terrace and offers the best view over Athens including Parliament and Acropolis. On our second morning breakfast was served in the Ballroom so it was breakfast with a morning twirl on the dance floor!
Greek Burgers and Gluten Free Club Sandwiches served in the Winter Garden were fabulous along with the elegant surroundings
and cocktails at nighttime in Athens; well that Rooftop Terrace becomes the only place to visit for a cocktail!
Would I recommend this Iconic Luxury Hotel in Athens: YES! If you have an opportunity to stay at this classic beauty you won’t regret it; fabulous location, incredible service, friendly staff and a Grand Dame of a hotel.
