So today I thought I would share my Gluten Free Rome tips…you will end up with a nice little Italian Food Baby called Luigi after reading this post. I found eating gluten free in Rome easier than London…there were so many options available and everyone seemed clued up on what to do.
La Soffitta Renovatio – Piazza del Risorgimento, 46/a, 00192 Roma, Italy
When I started to google gluten free options the day before our trip, I was pleasantly surprised to find the number one gluten free restaurant in Rome was just around the corner from our hotel. La Soffitta has being offering gluten free options since the 90’s and is the leader of the pack. I scoffed my way through some gluten free rice balls…
…we shared a gluten free pizza…
…and of course we had a rather big salad! This was our best gluten free meal in Rome and I can’t recommend La Soffitta enough. If you are planning on eating late then I would suggest making a reservation as it’s packed!
Mama Frites – Borgo Pio, 28 – 00193 Rome & Trastevere – Vicolo De’ Cinque, 42 – 00193 Rome (2 locations in Rome)
Located just across from our hotel was Mama Frites; they only offer gluten free! Trust me, my hotel choice landed me in the best gluten free position in Rome. Mama Frites offers Pizzas, sandwiches, fries obviously along with fried chicken and fish and chips…rather random I know but we decided to check it out. I had battered squid and prawns which were okay…they ran out of fish on our visit…check me out going all the way to Rome and wanting to eat fish and chips!
They also do gluten free donuts which are pretty darn tasty.
Hedera – Borgo Pio, 179, 00193 Roma, Italy (website in Italian / Tripadvisor reviews)
Hedera is a gorgeous little ice cream shop with gluten free options galore including gluten free crepes (which I didn’t try…silly iron deficiency making me lose my appetite!). The shop front is rather instagram worthy as well.
Trattoria Ciao – Borgo Pio, 146, Rome, Italy
Hmmm this was a pretty big disappointment (read the trip advisor link above) – the food was pretty pants but they did do gluten free pasta so it was a quick fix as we were both tired and hungry. As you can see from the photo, it wasn’t anything special however it was pretty darn cheap…you get what you pay for! We wished that our feet were able to carry us to La Soffitta however they were just too darn sore.
Borgo 36 – Borgo Pio, 36, 00193 Roma, Italy
Borgo 36 offers gluten free pasta but I wouldn’t recommend at all…the food was pretty average to say the least. Apparently there is salmon in this pasta…apparently! I didn’t see any myself. Once again, they do gluten free pasta so if you’re desperate pop in!
Babington’s Tea Rooms – Piazza di Spagna, 23, 00187 Roma, Italy
We stumbled on Babington’s Tea Rooms after walking around Rome and in desperate need to rest our feet and for a cup of tea!
Babington’s has had numerous famous visitors over the years including Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck and Elizabeth Taylor who would pop in between filming so this place is a Roman institution with a lot of history. G’s mum and I had a drink and a gluten free chocolate pie which was pretty dry…it’s not the cheapest place to enjoy a cuppa in Rome.
Frigidarium – Via del Governo Vecchio, 112, 00186 Roma, Italy
We only had one gelato stop on our whole weekend in Rome…such weirdo’s I know! But we had some truly delicious gelato at Frigidarium which is apparently one of the best in all of Rome.
On the wall, it stated clearly the dietary information of each flavour of ice cream…happy dance! Apparently they have gluten free cones as well, I didn’t ask and just went for a little tub.
Most of the above gluten free establishments are close to the Vatican as we were staying in the Borgo area of Rome which was rather lovely. So many restaurants in Rome do offer gluten free options as they have gluten free pasta and spaghetti which they can subsitute however they may not advertise this on the menu; just ask and hopefully the Roman Gods will be listening!
We didn’t eat a huge amount in Rome as were both sick with a head cold…we just nibbled away on a few Naked Bars when we were a tad peckish while out sightseeing.
