Review: Intercontinental Marseille Hotel Dieu, France

Ahh Intercontinental Marseille, it’s nice to be back – even if I did forget to blog about you back in 2014!  You know when you go back to the same hotel and it welcomes you like an old friend; you know where to find the bar (most important thing for my other half), you know where the breakfast is going to be served (most important thing for me) and the views are still just as beautiful as you remember from your first visit.

So on dull November morning we left drizzly London behind and flew out to Marseille where we were welcomed by blue skies (for some of our visit anyway!).  Check in was a breeze and all our Platinum Ambassador benefits were explained at check in.  I love this lobby, it’s welcoming and I don’t feel like you’re going to get in trouble for sitting down on a posh chair like I do in other hotels.

Strange what you start to notice about luxury hotels once you start to visit a few – I find hallways to be many hotels downfall as they’re so dull or rather badly scuffed however the Intercontinental Marseille doesn’t suffer from this problem and I even quite like the fancy carpet (I’m getting old as I’m talking about carpet on the blog – slap me now please!)

So are you ready for a snoop inside Room 337.

Our comfy bed for two nights which included the little Sweet Dreams story which was left on our pillow each night with a story from the area (I love this idea as it’s calorie free plus you learn something new).

My favourite thing about the Executive Terrace Room – the outdoor terrace area of course!  Where you can entertain, relax, enjoy your room service meal or even sleep the day away – the French sea air knocked out a certain Englishman (France 1, England 0) but it does show how comfy the seats are.

This view gets me every time including when it’s pouring with rain…

For some reason on my two visits to Marseille I’ve struggled to find gluten free food, it’s like Marseille cooks everything in gluten!  I ended up ordering really yummy omelettes from Room Service and chips (those chips were so good).

The bar during the afternoon offers a tea and cake deal which got me all excited…

…BUT unfortunately nothing was gluten free even the macaroons (they called the kitchen to ask!).  How good does this all look, oh to eat gluten!

Don’t fret my Ambassador welcome gift included fresh fruit so I didn’t go completely hungry!

As this was our second visit to Marseille (you can find my city break guide to Marseille hereand we had done a lot of the touristy stuff on our previous visit we decided to relax in the hotel watching movies (it was a rainy day) and spend an afternoon in the spa.

I’m not really into spas as I find hotel treatments to be so over priced however my New Years resolution is to relax more so I decided to try the Spa by Clarins at the hotel.  My treatment was a full body massage – the massage was lovely but can I just say how on earth are you meant to relax wearing those horrible little disposable knickers!?  The spa stocks the full range of Clarins products and these are the branded toiletries used in the hotel.

As well as a heated pool, there is also a steam room, sauna and rainbow shower to help you relax and I left that spa so relaxed that I didn’t know what country I was in!

We stayed at the Intercontinental Marseille when the hotel first opened last year and had a few issues however these are now ironed out and the hotel is run like a well oiled machine. The service in the bar area was what you would expect from a 5 star hotel and my gluten free breakfast request was handled with care.

If you are planning a city break to Marseille then I would highly recommend the Intercontinental Marseille Hotel Dieu – if you do stay make sure you ask to see the mosaics!

Have you stayed at the Intercontinental Marseille – what was your experience like and your thoughts on the hotel?

xx
