Tirau, New Zealand is your classic New Zealand town…blink and you’ll miss it however if you drive through really slowly with your eyes wide open then you’ll catch a glimpse of something rather brilliant; the Tirau corrugated creations which are dotted throughout the town.
And these corrugated iron creations are bloody huge!
I’ve visited Tirau a few times and actually have the giant dog and sheep as my personal facebook cover from yonks ago (basically proving my Kiwi credentials)…the town does offer some unique shops including a Trellis Cooper Outlet Shop, Bendon outlet shop, a few art galleries and craft shops…and of course a number of dining options.
Trust me you could walk the Main Street of Tirau in a ten minutes…and that’s both sides! The town isn’t big however it’s bloody delightful and a fun drive from Auckland if you’re looking for a place for a tiki tour.
We visited early in January as Lisa wanted to visit the Book Fair that was held in the town hall…
…books galore and Lisa walked away with a few bargains.
We had a wander around town…Mama made a purchase at Trelise Cooper…a dress for her 65th birthday which is next year…we won’t mention that Daddy’s birthday is in March and still not planned!
^^Classic Kiwi pub
This kiwi bird is one hot lady…
…obviously New Zealand’s answer to Beyonce!
I found Helen Clark’s hand prints…hmmm…
…not her biggest fan but hey ho…I may have snapped a photo and walked over them.
These two are my absolute favourite…
…check out that side eye action going on!
Travel Tips for Tirau, New Zealand
- There is parking on the Main Street and down the side streets off the Main Street.
- The Tourist Information centre is inside the giant corrugated dog
- We grabbed some grub at the Cabbage Tree Cafe which was okay but I thought was overpriced for the quality…you won’t leave hungry as they serve up a lot of sides with each dish. As we walked past the Twisted Cafe, the food there looked really good…we had food envy!
- You can learn more about these impressive Corrugated Creations here
- The Blue Spring at Te Waihou Walkway is close by and it’s the walk that is high up on my New Zealand wish list at the moment.
