Afternoon Tea at Flitwick Manor, Bedfordshire

It was the Duchess of Bedford that had the rumbly tummy around 3pm and required some delicious treats to get her through the afternoon.  And since I actually live in Bedfordshire I thought I should actually start visiting some establishments in the county starting with trying the gluten free afternoon tea at Flitwick Manor.

Sandwiches

The gluten free bread was a little dry and very thick – the fillings were the traditional egg, salmon, cucumber and ham.  The normal sarnies looked delicious with the same traditional fillings.  (Photos – all gluten free bar bottom right which are the normal sarnies)

Scones

The scones did pass my scone test – they were easy to cut into, they didn’t break a tooth and they were tasty.  As you can see from the photos they were slightly dry and crumbly but a dollop of cream and jam made it all stick back together again.

Pastries

The gluten free pastries were a simple chocolate brownie, bakewell tart and a jam and coconut twirl.  They weren’t the most inventive gluten free pastry selection however for the price of the afternoon tea they were sufficient.

G had an ice cream as part of his normal pastry selection, I was slightly jealous (Photos – all gluten free except for the bottom right which is the normal afternoon tea)

Tea

My favourite part of the afternoon tea experience at Flitwick Manor was the tea.  They use Twinnings and this had to be one of the most fun tea experiences I’ve had in a while where you got to time your tea to perfection.

Atmosphere

The afternoon tea is served in a lounge area with big comfy chairs.  Everything was perfect until an Australian couple walked in with the strongest accents ever – G and I almost died laughing and they didn’t have inside voices (I don’t possess an inside voice either!).

Service

The service was attentive but not intrusive and we were asked on a number of occasions if we would like more water to top up the tea.

Would I recommend this afternoon tea – the full afternoon tea at Flitwick Manor costs £17.95pp which I think is well priced for the afternoon tea treats you are receiving.  Flitwick Manor also off a Cream Tea for £8.95pp if you don’t wish to have a full afternoon tea experience.

After eating all those calories, take a wander through the gardens and enjoy the beautiful Bedfordshire scenery but beware of the squirrels!
